Captioned as “a story that amazes”, “a journey through history” and “a look into the future”, the Lumen Museum of Mountain Photography cooly launched in December, ready for the 2018/19 winter season.

Rewriting the rules for the presentation of mountain photography and THE place to go for mountain enthusiasts and those who want to become one, the museum is housed in a former funicular station in the Dolomite Mountains, Italy.

With exhibition and event spaces spanning 4 floors and able to accommodate up to 150 visitors, they include both permanent and an ever-changing programme of exhibits.  From the wonderfully-named spaces such as ‘The Room of Miracles’, the ‘Dia Horama’ and ‘Adrenaline’ and ‘Mirror’ Rooms, to a permanent exhibition dedicated to the mountain pioneer Reinhold Messner, Lumen has been curated to generate awe, to inspire, as well as challenge the beholder.

With the building sitting at 2275m above sea level on top of Mount Kronplatz-Plan de Corones, the redesign needed to be able to hold its own whilst ensuring it did not ‘ingratiate‘ itself as it sits surrounded by some of the most stunning alpine scenery. Architect Gerhard Mahlknecht of the firm EM2 Architekten was commissioned to deliver the space which does just that.

A unique attraction and one that CF is looking forward to dropping into!
